History of Colorado Cattle Ranching Lecture

March 26 @ 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Free

In honor of Colorado’s 150th anniversary, Douglas Land Conservancy in collaboration with the Douglas County Library and support from Douglas County History Repository is pleased to announce a celebration of the history of cattle ranching in Douglas County. Stop by the Philip and Jerry Miller Library in Castle Rock through April to see the ranch history display and find several books to learn more in the local history lounge upstairs.

Long-time resident Sharon Sjostrom will share stories of cattle drives from Texas and the transition from open range to fenced ranches. You’ll hear about some of the ranches that have now been permanently protected with conservation easements, like Greenland and Cherokee ranches, and the breeds of cattle they introduced and raised in Colorado. A reception will be held upstairs in the local history lounge beginning at 5pm. This is a great chance to view the display of Ranch history that the Library has put together and share stories. The presentation will begin at 6pm downstairs in Event Hall B.

This display and presentation are part of a project to preserve and protect the cultural history of our conserved lands. This means archiving historical documents, saving physical artifacts from destruction, interviewing landowners and long-time residents, and consolidating information to contribute to our understanding of the amazing history of Douglas County.

DLC presentations are offered free of charge, but a $10 per person donation is suggested so that we may continue to offer educational outreach events in the community.
