If you’re looking to get outside and enjoy nature in or near Douglas County, there are several fantastic camping options just a short drive away. Skip the mountain traffic and spend a few nights under the stars close to home instead. Whether you’re after a family-friendly campground, a peaceful retreat near water, or a quick weekend getaway, these five camping spots near Douglas County are perfect for roasting marshmallows and making lasting memories (fire restrictions permitting).
As with most Colorado campgrounds in the summer, reservations fill up quickly – so be sure to plan ahead.
Chatfield State Park
Amenities: Picnic tables, flush toilets, dump station, power connection, group shower facilities
At Chatfield State Park, you’ll find excellent camping facilities for both individuals and groups, including 12 campsites designed to be accessible for visitors with disabilities. Four campground areas offer a total of 197 campsites, 146 of which include full hook-ups. Group campsites are equipped with four electrical pedestals and a water hydrant at each site.
Beyond camping, Chatfield offers miles of hiking trails and easy access to the reservoir, making it a popular destination for stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, boating, and other water activities.
Keep in mind that if you do not have a Colorado State Parks Pass or Go Wild Pass access, you’ll need to pay a park entrance fee in addition to your camping fees.
Cherry Creek State Park
Amenities: Picnic tables, flush toilets, dump station, power connection, group shower facilities
Cherry Creek State Park offers 140 campsites, including both full hook-up RV sites and tent camping options, and is open year-round. The campground also features an outdoor amphitheater for group gatherings, complete with bench seating, a podium, and a fire pit. Additional amenities include shower and laundry facilities, a dump station, firewood for purchase, and ADA-accessible campsites.
Beyond camping, Cherry Creek is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. Visitors can explore miles of hiking trails or spend the day on the reservoir enjoying stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, boating, and other water activities.

Jellystone Campground
Amenities: Full service
Located off I-25 near Larkspur, for campers who prefer a little luxury with their outdoor adventure, this is the place to be. Featuring full RV hook-ups, multiple cabin options, and an impressive lineup of amenities, this Jellystone Campground feels more like a family resort than a traditional campground. The only accommodation you won’t find here is tent camping.
Popular amenities include two heated swimming pools, hot tubs, miniature golf, a basketball court, and multiple pickleball courts. The campground also offers a packed calendar of activities and events that keep guests of all ages entertained throughout their stay.
Lone Rock Campground
Amenities: Picnic tables, vault toilets, potable water
About an hour from Castle Rock, Lone Rock Campground has 15 tent/RV sites available and is located on the South Platte River. The campground boasts gold medal waters and views of the river. Lone Rock Campground is the only campground on the river that accepts recreational vehicles (RVs) and the only campground on the river that accepts reservations. It is extremely popular during the summer months.
In addition to fishing, campers can also enjoy hiking, tubing, boating on nearby Cheesman Reservoir.
Lone Rock does not have electricity or water hook-ups. There is no dump station available.
Rampart Range Recreation Area
Amenities: Picnic tables, vault toilets
In the Rampart Range Recreation Area, there are 99 designated dispersed campsites located along Rampart Range Road. About 30 of these sites can be reserved via Recreation.gov, while the rest are first-come, first-served. There is no access to water. Be prepared to pack out everything you pack in.
Devils Head Campground is an established campground with 21 campsites with water, pit toilets, and a maximum RV length of 22 feet. It is strictly first-come, first-served.
Flat Rocks Campground is a wooded campground with 19 campsites to accommodate both tents and recreational vehicles up to 30 feet in length. No electricity, dump station or hook ups are available. Water is available. It is strictly first-come, first-served.
This is a popular area for off-road vehicles, with access to over 300 miles of motorized trails in this area. There are also hiking trails, including the popular Devil’s Head Fire Lookout Tower.
