Why Bud’s Bar Gets Called the Best Burger in Douglas County
Drive down Santa Fe in Douglas County, and there’s a good chance you’ll miss it. Tucked inside a nondescript building in Sedalia, Bud’s Bar is easy to overlook, identified by little more than the sign out front. But if you live in Douglas County and haven’t stopped by, you’re missing out on a true piece of local history.
Bud’s burgers have been consistently ranked among the best in Colorado – and even the country – by multiple publications over the years, including the Food Network. And once you try one, it’s easy to understand why.
At Bud’s, you won’t find a menu packed with burgers and endless toppings. You won’t even find french fries. What you will find is one damn good burger.

The famous steamed burgers come as a single or double, hamburger or cheeseburger, and are served simply with pickles, onions, and a bag of Lay’s chips. And make sure you bring cash because Bud’s doesn’t accept credit cards.
Bud’s Bar has been a local landmark in Sedalia since 1948, when Bud Hebert opened the bar. Back then, a hamburger cost 50 cents and a beer was just a quarter. Today, that same burger will set you back $6.20 – a pretty incredible deal by today’s standards.
While ownership has changed over the years, much of the character and history of Bud’s remains. The bar and tables are often filled with loyal patrons, including families who have been coming for generations. Some staff members have been there for decades, too, adding to the feeling that you’re stepping into a place where time has moved just a little slower.
There’s even a book, “I Shouldn’t Say This”, by Chet Heir, a regular patron and local rancher. The book captures many of the colorful stories and memories surrounding Bud’s that have been collected over generations. Hot tip: you can find the book at the Douglas County Libraries.
That’s part of what makes Bud’s Bar so special. Yes, you’re going for the burger, but you’re also getting a little taste of Douglas County history.
